Picture Rocks National Lakeshore
a lovely and unique landscape
As native Michiganders, we wish we had taken more time as adults to visit the Upper Penninsula and appreciate its natural beauty more. While there on our two day stay we booked a boat tour to see Picture Rocks National Lakeshore.

We expected the boat tour to be around 45 minutes, but it was actually two hours round trip! The two story ship was packed on the upper deck, but we stayed below and were able to enjoy the scenery with the windows open. It was difficult to get photos with everyone else on the boat trying to get in the best position for their own shots. Above is one of the famous rock formations called Indian Drum or Bear Feet Rock.
Miner's Castle
Miner’s Castle was another rock formation that was neat to see. There are many overlooks and beaches along the lakeshore available to the public. Miner’s Castle is one of these places. There is a deck just behind the rock that allow people to view Lake Superior from the edge. There used to be two ‘turrets’ that made up Miner’s Castle, but in 2006 one of the rocks fell off the cliff and into the water.

Spray Falls
Just before turning around and making our way back to port, we saw this beautiful waterfall cascading down into Lake Superior. Spray Falls drops an impressive 70 feet into the water. As we travel the US we find ourselves seeking out waterfalls, Spray Falls was a highlight of our visit to Michigan’s Upper Penninsula.
East channel Lighthouse
Erected in 1868, the East Channel Lighthouse protected sailors as they entered Munising Bay. It is said that the final stewards of the lighthouse lived in this small building with their 12 children.
The 2-hour long tour for my family of five was a unique and beautiful sight. However, it was also one of the more expensive activities we’ve done over the past few months of travel. Our 2 adult tickets were $50 each, and our children’s tickets were $14 each. We still think the price was worth it, as Tiffanie and I have always wanted to see Picture Rocks National Lakeshore.

about us
full time travel in our fifth wheel rv
We officially launched in March 2020 from our homebase just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina. We had done it. Sold everything- our home and 90% of our possessions – to travel the country and live a simpler life with less stuff and more experiences. We had no idea what was in store for us! We had never owned or towed a trailer of any kind; we hadn’t even camped as a family!! Subscribe to our blog and learn what it takes to sell it all and live full time out of a fifth wheel RV.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Great photos and very informative. Looks well worth the mula for the boat ride. God bless you and keep you safe on all your adventures!!!
Thanks for visiting our blog and taking the time to leave a comment! We had a ton of fun visiting the U.P. #ROAMfree
